Sonya DenneyOwner / Director / Instructor / Choreographer
Miss Sonya realized a dream when Sonya’s Dance Zone was started in 2005. Dance and Children have always been a passion of hers. She studied at Dixon Dance Studio, Battin School of Dance and Ball State University where she was a member of the Ball State Dance Theatre. She has choreographed two national winning routines. Miss Sonya teaches Tap, Jazz, Ballet and Lyrical, as well as tumbling classes. She is also actively involved in her church and has two daughters.
Sarah McFarlandDance Instructor / Choreographer / Assistant Team Director
Sarah has been teaching for 13 years. She started dancing at the age of 8, but her passion grew when she became a student of Miss Peggy Harris, Dance Plus Studio. In 2013, at Creation Dance Championships, her soloist (Nici Denney) won 13 & over for the World Cup Champion with her solo routine. Miss Sarah is proficient in all styles of dance offered at SDZ. Sarah credits Miss Peggy for instilling in her the love and passion of Dance!
Peggy HarrisDance Instructor / Choreographer / Lead Ballet Instructor
“Ms. Peggy” is a former director/studio owner of Dance Plus Studios in Edinburgh and New Whiteland Indiana. She trained at Jordan Academy and Butler University as well as Indiana State Dance Educators. She has over thirty five years of experience in all forms of dance. She has been recognized by the award winning Indianapolis Ballet Theater, Stepp Stewart/New York and LA Danceforce. She has trained ten instructors that are currently teaching. Miss Peggy is our “Prima” ballet instructor and also teaches Ballet, Jazz and Lyrical. She works with Essential Skills Students at Franklin School Corporation, and received Support Staff of the Year Award for 2011-2012.
Steph SchroughamDance and Acting Instructor / Choreographer
Miss Steph started her dancing career at Dance Time Studio at the tender age of 3. With a degree in Secondary Education Theatre, being a former collegiate cheerleader at University of Indianapolis, and a former Chill Girl for Indiana’s hockey team, Miss Steph loves the stage. Teaching primarily competition and recital hip hop, along with creative movement, acting, and jazz, she has been passing on her love for dance to DZ students since 2010. Miss Steph is also the Director of Catering and event planning at the Clarion Hotel as well as a devoted wife and mother.
Sarah StudlerDance Instructor / Choreographer
Sarah has been teaching for 3 years. She began dancing at the age of 4. Sarah was the first graduate at SDZ in 2010. Sarah currently is continuing her education at IUPUI pursuing a degree in Sociology. Sarah is so honored and feels so blessed to be able to work alongside those who taught and inspired her through her years of dancing.
Ariel MedarisDance Instructor / Choreographer
Miss Ariel has been dancing since she was 5 years old. She studied at Dance Plus and LaRose Dance Academy. She was a competitive dancers and received many top placements. She began teaching at LaRose her senior year in high school. Miss Ariel began teaching at SDZ in 2013. She teaches all dance styles. She has one daughter who also loves to dance.
Amber ClarkDance Instructor, Choreographer
Miss Amber is the newest addition to SDZ’s teaching staff. As a former student at Sonya’s, Miss Amber teaches hip hop, tap and jazz classes. Her bubbly attitude and innovative ideas make her an asset to the SDZ teaching staff. She is a mother of 2 and also works in the IT Department for CRH System Services.
Melaney AlveyCompetitive Dancer / Assistant Teaching Instructor / Choreographer
Miss Melany is a competitive dancer and instructor at SDZ. She is a member of our senior dance team, studying all styles of dance. She began her assistant teaching at SDZ in 2011. She is a junior in high school and her future plans include attending a 4 year college and getting a degree in Dental. She also plans to continue teaching for many years.
Lanell ChristensenCheerleading Program Director / Birthday Party Coordinator
Miss Lanell, Director of DZ Cheer Academy, has over 15 years coaching experience at all levels of cheer, from elementary to competitive. She is AACCA Safety and UCA Partner Stunt certified as well as an experienced, certified judge for both all-star and school cheer competitions. Lanell strives for her students to leave her classes, camps and clinics with a love of cheerleading and to be prepared for success at all levels of cheer. Lanell is also Assistant Cheer Coach at Columbus East High School and works full-time at Circle K’s corporate office.
DeShawn KellyTumbling Instructor
Miss DeShawn was a competitive gymnast for 10 years, 5 of which she was an elite level gymnast and a member of the Elite Nation Team in 1992. She was also a 3 year member of he senior national cheer team at Gym Tyme All Stars. Miss DeShawn coached optional level gymnastics and tumbling for 15 years and was the head coach at Jody’s Gymnastics Zone for 7 years. Miss DeShawn has been with SDZ since 2013. Her experience and knowledge as well as her encouraging attitude is a huge asset to SDZ tumbling program.
Angela RossTumbling Instructor
Miss Angie has worked at Sonya’s Dance Zone since 2012. She was a cheerleader and gymnast from 5th grade through high school. She has two children who dance at Sonya’s Dance Zone. Her daughter is a competitive dancer and her son is in our creative movement classes.
Deana HawkinsZUMBA Director
Deana was introduced to ZUMBA Fitness in the fall of 2008 while on my very own quest to lose weight and be a healthier. Within 15 minutes of her first ZUMBA class, she knew she had found something that would change her outlook on being healthy and working out. After losing 40 pounds she decided to get her instructor license and share ZUMBA Fitness with as many people as she possibly could. She obtained her instructors license in May of 2009 and have been teaching at SDZ ever since. Deana’s ZUMBA classes are high energy and guaranteed to be the best hour of your day. Whoever says exercising isn’t fun….. has obviously never tried ZUMBA with Deana’s ZUMBA Posse!
